Member Removal: Managing Collaborators
Remove members and manage access gracefully
Sometimes you need to remove family members from your tree. Relationship changes, privacy concerns, or unwanted behavior. Member removal lets you revoke access while preserving tree integrity. Their contributions stay (unless you delete), but they can no longer view or edit.
๐ How It Works
Remove Member
Tree settings โ Members โ Select member โ Remove. Confirm action. They immediately lose all access to tree.
Member Notification
Removed member receives notification (optional). Can disable notification for sensitive situations. They see "Access Revoked" when trying to view tree.
Content Ownership
Their memories stay on tree by default. You own tree, they contributed. Can optionally delete their content during removal.
Future Invitations
Can reinvite later if circumstances change. They rejoin as new member - previous edit history preserved but permissions reset.
๐ก Use Cases
- โขDivorce or relationship breakdown
- โขFamily disputes where access needs revoking
- โขRemoving deceased members (convert to memorial)
- โขInappropriate behavior or harassment
- โขPrivacy concerns or trust issues
- โขSimplifying member list for inactive users
โจ Pro Tips
- โExport tree before removing someone in case you need their contributions
- โConsider restricting to view-only before full removal
- โHave conversation first if possible - removal is dramatic
- โRemoved members can't see tree but memories about them remain
- โCan remove and block to prevent re-invitation requests
- โKeep their memories unless they were harmful - history matters
โ Frequently Asked Questions
Can removed members see their old memories?
No. They lose all access. If they want copies, they should export before being removed. You're not obligated to provide.
What if I accidentally remove someone?
Reinvite them immediately. They rejoin with same content but reset permissions. Explain accident - most understand.
Can I remove the person who invited me to the tree?
Only if you're tree owner. If they own tree and you're member, you can only leave voluntarily. Can't kick owner.
What happens to co-authored memories?
They stay with all authors credited. Can't remove authorship after publishing. But removed member can't edit anymore.
Can removed members still see their Firefly Bursts?
No. Firefly Bursts only show memories you have access to. Removal means no more bursts from that tree.
